Nintendo "a few years late" - Pachter

During his weekly Pach Attack show, industry analyst Michael Pachter has expressed some interesting views on a potential entry from Apple into the console market, as well as his thoughts on the Wii Mini and Wii U.

"I just think Nintendo’s a few years late. So, the Wii U is the Wii HD, it’s coming three years too late. The Wii Mini was a great idea back in 2008/2009, they probably should have brought it out then – they’re way too late.

I think they try way too hard to get things right and it takes a long time. The eShop is seven or eight years too late, online multiplayer for Nintendo is seven or eight years too late. Nintendo has got great ideas, it’s just that they’re great ideas from the last decade. The Wii Mini is one of them.”

I actually like what he has to say, but I think it's far, far too early to be commenting on the success of the Wii U. Wait until they unleash the big boys (Pikmin, Super Smash Bros., Zelda, Metroid etc) and we'll start to see a lot of people changing their tune.

And not a single mention of the WiiU Gamepad being the first of its kind, or the fact that Nintendo have basically shaped gaming into what it is today since they began with their innovation and creativity with their games, their controllers and their consoles.

They go off on their own tangent and build the future, unlike Sony and Microsoft who just make their machines more powerful and then copy Nintendo's concepts later on.

Yeah, not going to take this guy seriously.

What did he say about apple? If apple can enter a fiercely competitive market like mobile phones and gain traction, how is it late for nintendo? Other than mobile gaming (casual gaming at best) apple isn't even on the right bus and have taken the scenic route..
Nintendo regardless of how much grunt their consoles have, have always innovated.
Would I buy an apple console, not after their tv, gamecenter and eco-system.

Nintendo might have been in the game for a long time but they actually have titles that people want. Apple doesn't have that, they have third party support but nothing I'd want to play on a mobile or in front of a tv.

I just can't see them changing anything except relying on their cloud/app store momentum but how long will that last when you can see other competitors at least in the mobile suffocating that dominance... Apple gaming just bores me.

Well before this abnormally long home console generation, that probably would have been the expected timeframe between the next hardware cycle; 4-5 years.

Not counting the Wii Mini or whatever in that statement. I have to agree about his opinion on that one, it's way too late.

Thinking of it as just a Wii HD, yeah, it's late.

But it's more than that. Services (online) and graphics, N lags but game play, they're ahead.

That's what I think it most important anyway.

It wouldn't have been though. Wii Mini = Wii...but I get it, Wii was selling like hotcakes and they didn't want to affect the bottom line. Nintendo does a great job of hiding its "we really really only want to make a profit" direction. I remember them saying for Wii that it's "what gamers want"...really? Telling ME what I want? Nah. And then subtly they say they'll be selling it at a profit.

Patch isn't wrong, some people just can't handle it. Nintendo went from complete and absolute domination to losing so much ground on the stock market, and that's all this guy cares about. Investors don't care for a product or how innovative if it is, if there isn't much hope in the company being able to match it, and it passed on the opportunity.

Wii U sales are now losing out to Xbox 360. Epic LOL. They went from like 70,000 to 20,000 in a week. That's bad news.

Epic pricecut in the near future. Calling it. Their stock is going to plummet. Think outside the square about what drives the company.

"Oh, we're bring all of our departments together to make one big happy awesome Nintendo family."

Japanese for, "We're downsizing the hell out of this shiz!"

That would've meant a Wii U announcement in early 2008, before or shortly after the release of most of Wii's to-be-topselling titles (MKW, NSMB, SSBB etc). From March 08 to now the Wii sold an extra 72.73 million units... how different would it have been if ppl knew Nintendo's focus had already moved to the Wii U during this time? Plus a successor so early would've pissed off both consumers and devs, and surely strain their R&D budgets. I really can't see any benefit for it - except to satisfy those few who kept complaining about lack of HD.

I think they are a bit late, but their first party games always make up for any hardware issues. They cant continue to rely on those alone though. There needs to be strong 3rd party support that is maintained throughout the Wii U's lifecycle.
